Free Day! The 197th Anniversary of the Battle of New Orleans
Taking place on January 8, 1815, on a cold, foggy battlefield at Chalmette just below New Orleans, this bold action resulting in shocking American victory was the final and pivotal battle of the War of 1812, ending the three-year war with Britain. General Jackson defeated a British invasion on American soil even though his ragtag army was greatly outnumbered – with approximately 4,000 American soldiers versus approximately 10,000 British soldiers - forever marking Andrew Jackson as an American military hero and laying the foundation for his eventual election to the presidency.
