Adopted Son Andrew Jackson, Jr.
We know very little about Andrew Jackson’s ancestors. Apparently Jackson knew very little himself. Since his father died before he was born and his mother died when he was a teenager, he had little opportunity to learn about his family background. Although many of his mother’s sisters lived nearby while he was growing up, he maintained a close relationship with only a few of them once he moved to Tennessee. After Jackson achieved fame at the Battle of New Orleans and later as President, several people wrote to him inquiring about a relationship. He did not record how he responded to these questions.

Grandson Andrew Jackson, III
While the names of Jackson’s forbearers are unclear, information about his descendents is well documented. Andrew and Rachel Jackson had no children of their own. Their adopted son and heir, Andrew Jackson Junior had four sons and one daughter. Two of his sons died as infants and a third died during the Civil War before marrying. Andrew Jackson Jr. and his wife Sarah had eleven grandchildren, two through their son Andrew and nine from their daughter Rachel. Only one of Andrew Jackson III’s sons had children, therefore the number of Jackson descendents named “Jackson” is very limited.
