8. Where did Rachel live before she came to Tennessee? Rachel was born in Pittsylvania County, Virginia. Her father was a member of the Virginia legislature, a surveyor, a militia leader, a landowner, and an iron manufacturer. He moved his family to East Tennessee in 1779 with the intention of joining James Robertson in an expedition to settle in the middle Tennessee area. Rachel joined her father on the flatboat "Adventure," along with other women, children, and men as they traveled the Holston, Tennessee, Ohio, and Cumberland rivers until they reached the "French Lick," where the Robertson party awaited them, on April 24, 1780.
9. Was Rachel divorced when she married Andrew Jackson? In 1790, Rachel left Tennessee to visit friends near Natchez. Later Andrew Jackson also went to Natchez. When they returned to Nashville in 1791, they had supposedly married. No one has ever located any written record of the Natchez wedding. Rachel's husband, Lewis Robards, had initiated divorce proceedings, but the divorce was not final. With new evidence based on the Natchez “marriage”, Robards completed the divorce by charging Rachel with bigamy. During the 1828 election campaign, Jackson's political supporters published a booklet outlining their position on the timeline of the marriage and telling the story of the false message of a final divorce in 1791.

The Hermitage property which Andrew Jackson bought from Nathaniel Hays on August 23, 1804, for $3,500 was a 425-acre tract of land. The farm would over time grow to over 1,050 acres. Today, the Ladies' Hermitage Association administers 1120 acres of land as a historic site including almost all of Jackson’s acreage.
14. Did Andrew Jackson name The Hermitage, and what does it mean? Jackson letters after he purchased The Hermitage were initially addressed as from Rural Retreat. Hermitage essentially means a place where a hermit would live.
