Was Rachel divorced when she married Andrew Jackson?

In 1790, Rachel left Tennessee to visit friends near Natchez. Later Andrew Jackson also went to Natchez. When they returned to Nashville in 1791, they had supposedly married. No one has ever located any written record of the Natchez wedding. Rachel’s husband, Lewis Robards, had initiated divorce proceedings, but the divorce was not final. With new evidence based on the Natchez “marriage”, Robards completed the divorce by charging Rachel with bigamy. During the 1828 election campaign, Jackson’s political supporters published a booklet outlining their position on the timeline of the marriage and telling the story of the false message of a final divorce in 1791.
