Over 100 years old and fresh as a daisy! Spring Outing at The Hermitage has a storied history that dates back to the early years of The Ladies' Hermitage Association when officers were elected to their posts on that day - the third Wednesday in May - at a picnic on the grounds, complete with decorated picnic baskets and lots of big hats. Over the years, board procedures have changed, along with social customs - and the event has changed, as well. But you can still find some gorgeous hats at Spring Outing! On Wednesday, May 15th, The Ladies' Hermitage Association (LHA) celebrated its time-honored tradition with a tented luncheon held on the front lawn of the Hermitage mansion, with Tennessee's First Lady, Crissy Haslam, as featured speaker. The event was chaired by Carrie Hininger and Mary Belle Grande and presented by Adams and Reese LLP and CCA. The weather was perfect, table décor delightful, and the lunch served by Chef's Market delicious. The sell-out crowd of 300 was entertained while dining by Nashville Old Time String Band Association and later charmed by the grace and historical perspective of Mrs. Haslam. Longtime board member and beloved Nashville artist and councilman Phil Ponder was presented with the Regent's Award for excellent service to the LHA, and incoming Regent Debby Patterson Koch presented the traditional carved walking stick, modeled after one of Jackson's, to Emily J. Reynolds, who will step down as LHA Regent when her two-year tenure concludes on June 30th.

In introductory remarks prior to the champagne toast led by the event chairs, Carrie Hininger shared her own story of affection and aspirations for The Hermitage. Years ago, Carrie and her husband, Damon, lived in a neighborhood near the site and Carrie often did her daily run on the park-like grounds. She recalled her sense of pride in knowing she was running across the same ground traversed by one of America's most influential leaders, and she was profoundly grateful that there were people dedicated to preserving the property.  When she and Damon finally toured the site, they were impressed not only by the beauty and history, but also by the joy of visiting school children who shared what they'd learned about The Hermitage and the Jackson household with adult visitors. Now as the parents of a young daughter and son, the Hininger's have become supporters of The Hermitage. They look forward to their own children learning more about our national history and being inspired as American citizens.

Spring Outing 2013 generated support to teach and inspire future leaders, right here at the home of a great American hero. The Hermitage, Home of President Andrew Jackson, is our nation's most authentically preserved early American presidential site. Situated on 1,120 acres, with 25 historic buildings, The Hermitage is open to the public for touring, education programs and private events throughout the year. Almost 200,000 visitors annually, from around the world, and more than 30,000 students of all ages, experience the beauty and impact of the site.
